THE INSPIRATION
Medford State University was created as part of my continued exploration into building original college identities that feel unique while still fitting naturally within their communities. The project focused on creating a program that reflected elevation, resilience, and the rugged beauty of the Pacific Northwest, drawing inspiration from the landscape and culture of Southern Oregon.

Medford was chosen as the fictional home of the university because the area does not have a major collegiate athletic program. That choice helped make the concept feel grounded and believable, allowing space for a school that could realistically exist within the western college sports landscape.

As part of the creative process, the main logo direction was influenced by an image I found on a stock image site. I then modified and refined the design to fit my goals for creating a fictional NCAA-style team for the game and shaping it into an identity that aligned with the overall vision for the program.

This project was developed as a creative exercise to expand the in-game college universe with a school that feels authentic and regionally connected. Storytelling, regional influence, and modern sports design all influenced logo development, color selection, and overall branding.

The color palette of orange, green, and white was chosen intentionally. Green reflects the forests and natural environment of Oregon, while orange represents distinct color visibility and a fall mountain vibe.

The Logo
The Ridgehawks mascot concept draws from the mountain ridges and open skies surrounding the Medford area. The hawk represents vision, focus, and strength — a symbol of rising above challenges and maintaining perspective. The name naturally connects the team to the region’s geography while creating a strong, modern athletic identity suited for branding and logo development.
